LiftMaster garage door remote replacement: identify yours
LiftMaster is the installer brand of the Chamberlain group, so LiftMaster and Chamberlain share a lot of their remote systems. The learn button on the motor is the quickest way to identify yours.
Which LiftMaster system do you have?
LiftMaster openers mostly use Chamberlain’s rolling-code systems:
- Security+, the original rolling-code system.
- Security+ 2.0, the newer version.
- Older openers may use a fixed code set with DIP switches.
A LiftMaster motor and a Chamberlain motor on the same system can share remotes. Two LiftMaster motors on different systems can’t. It comes down to the system, the frequency and when the motor was made.
The learn button on the motor is colour-coded by system, so a clear photo of it tells us most of what we need.
Security+ is rolling code, so a universal copying remote won’t work. Rolling code vs fixed code explains why.
No clear label? What to photograph
Start with the learn button:
- The learn button on the motor unit, close enough that we can see its colour. It’s often on the side or back of the motor, and sometimes under the light cover.
- The motor label, which gives the model and often the frequency.
- The remote, front and back, if you still have one. A Chamberlain-branded remote on a LiftMaster door is worth mentioning.
What to photograph shows what a useful photo looks like.
